United States Air Force Band Retirement Celebration

We happened to be sitting in front of them on Independence Day (fitting, right?); my husband was teaching me how to keep a scorecard. Now, I love baseball - I like going to the games, I like watching it, I love my team (Bmore!), I enjoy the antics of my husband's team (the A's), I cheer for the home team (Go Nats!). When pressed, however, I just dont know how to articulate what I'm watching as well as I should be able to. This frustrates me. I strive for perfection in everything I do - and keeping a scorecard is no different.

At one point, I exclaimed, "I'm a photographer! I'm not built for this!" And, thus, I was booked for Lisa Maloney's retirement from the Air Force Band.

It was a scorcher of a day - typical DC humidity with the sun beating down on you as soon as it rises. But, it was a beautiful ceremony, filled with family, friends, and love -- and LOTS of water bottles.

I was proud to be a part of this event. I dont often think about what living in the nation's capital means; I drive by the monuments and complain about the tourist traffic, fly into National and am consistently surprised at the oOOooo's from the other passengers as we come in for landing over the Potomac, and see Marine One fly over my house with surprising frequency. I love living in DC, but at some point, all of this must have become commonplace for me - though I have no idea when.

This event was the first time in a long time that I had that "wow" feeling when looking across the Potomac River from an incredibly inspiring memorial to the Washington, DC, skyline in the early morning. It was a truly special day for everyone.
