Laura and Tom had a beautiful, bright wedding at Historic Whitehall Manor

We loved photographing Laura and Tom's sun-filled, romantic wedding day. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Historic Whitehall Manor was the perfect backdrop for their celebration. The air was warm and everyone was overflowing with joy for Tom and Laura - including us!

We asked Laura and Tom to reflect on their wedding day and share their experience with us. We loved reading their answers, so we've shared them with you below! Enjoy!

What was your favorite part about the wedding?

The ceremony and getting to see all of our friends and family when we walked back up the aisle together as husband and wife!

What were your top 5 favorite moments from your wedding?

In no order, excluding ceremony since that was #1:

- Speeches from Maid of Honor, Best Man and Father of Bride

- Dancing all evening including the Father of the Groom's dancing (!!)

- Seeing Laura's grandparents dancing together (first time)

- Ending night with Bohemian Rhapsody with everyone in a circle with arms linked (which was a high school thing)

- Bourbon part of the ceremony / bourbon unity ceremony

- Maid of Honor and Best Man running endless laps around us when we tried to take the sparkler photo

- And all of the crazy things they were saying throughout (Maid of Honor may have joked she was going to light the Best Man's pants on fire while running around with the sparklers haha!)

Laura's grandmother's handkerchief made of Irish lace was her "something old"; she incorporated "something borrowed" and "something blue" was a tennis bracelet from Laura's aunt. For her wedding day, Laura's wedding party made a personalized charm bracelet with a charms that they had each selected. This bracelet was used to hold the Irish lace handkerchief around Laura's bouquet. So sweet!

What was the planning process like? Did you run into any obstacles? How did you overcome them?

Planning our Virginia wedding from California could be a challenge, particularly as we got closer to the date and were looking to figure out all of the decorations, favors, and gifts. There were a lot of labor-intensive tasks and some last minute errands that we couldn't do until we were back in Virginia the week leading up to the wedding but we got a lot of help from our family and friends. Google Docs was our friend throughout the planning process. Google Calendar... not so much when I realized I had mixed up travel dates and that we had a conflict the weekend we had originally selected to do our engagement photos in California :X Luckily, Katie was able to be flexible and change her travel dates and still photograph our engagement session in San Jose!

How do you think hiring a wedding photographer impacted the way you will remember your wedding?

It will give us an amazing, beautiful way to look back at our wedding day and relive the experience! Having Photos from the Harty capture all of the amazing moments from the wedding that we couldn't necessarily be a part of or witness directly and to see all of our family and friends and how they experienced our wedding day - it was perfect! It's also been incredible to be able to share photos with our family and friends who couldn't be there in person and to watch our loved ones' faces light up as they look through each photograph.

Hiring Photos from the Harty for our engagement and wedding photography was one of the best decisions we made in planning our wedding!

Off the bat, we were struck by how warm and friendly Sara and Katie were when we first spoke with them and how interested they were in getting to know us and to learn more about our wedding day. They were incredibly flexible and accommodating, chatting with us over the phone or via Google Hangout several times (since we now live out in California). Katie even traveled out to the west coast for our engagement session and we were able to include our dog in most of the photos - for which we were so grateful!

On the day of our wedding, they did such an amazing job!! They were super friendly and easy to work with and were incredibly kind and patient working with our wedding parties and our families for formal group photos. Throughout the wedding, they captured so many amazing little moments, big and small, candid and formal, and all of their work has served as such beautiful reminders of our special day!

You can really tell just how passionate and just how dedicated they are to their craft! Above all else, Sara, Katie and Chris were sincerely a pleasure to work with both throughout the entire planning process (including engagement photos) and on our wedding day.

How to Plan the Perfect Proposal Session | Photography Tips

How to plan for your proposal photography session

Proposals may be one of the most nerve-racking, exciting experiences in your life - at least to this point. You’ve chosen the person you want to spend the rest of your life with, you have the perfect ring burning a hole in your pocket…Now what?

You’re only doing this once, so having the moment captured by a professional photographer is a wonderful way to remember every detail! This will be one of the happiest moments the two of you and, especially if it’s a surprise proposal, having your significant other’s reaction captured is everything.

So, how do you choose a photographer and what’s the whole process about? We’ve got you covered!

Find a photographer you click with

You’ve done your research and you love the photos you’re seeing on social media and online, but do you enjoy the person behind the lens? This is extremely important to us: you’ll be spending one of the most important moments of your life to date with us and it’s crucial that you enjoy the entire experience - not just the product you receive afterward.

Choose a location and time of day that works best for lighting - and your schedule

We love sunset and sunrise proposals. The lighting is just beautiful! If you want to propose around noon, when the sun is at its highest point in the sky, we’ll probably suggest stepping under the shade of a tree, building, etc. so that the light is not directly in your eyes. We want to avoid squinting as much as possible - and we want to make sure that you are in flattering lighting. Overcast days are surprisingly gorgeous because the lighting is soft and low-contrast!

Choose a location that has some sort of value for you two

You’re going to have these photographs forever. These images carry sentimental value and you want the location to have the same feeling! Whether you choose to propose at the location of your first date, somewhere in DC because you met there, a garden during cherry blossom season because you know that your significant other loves when things are in bloom, it will be perfect. We’ve photographed in sunflower fields, on cliffs, in bars or coffee shops, in the middle of the street during a snowstorm in Annapolis, and tons of other crazy cool moments all over the world. We love to do something special, unique, and fun!

Choose a backup plan that you’ll be just as happy with

Ask your photographer about the location, the lighting, and have us check the weather as the day gets closer. We often block a second “rain date” just in case something comes up that does not work with the most important parts of your vision.

If you don’t mind having umbrellas, standing in a different location if it’s a bit muddy, or parking a few extra blocks away if there’s an event nearby, we’re happy to keep the initial date. However, if you come down with the flu, you may want to reschedule. We totally understand that no one wants to have fever sweats while proposing to the love of their life (let alone, have photos of them taken)!

Having a backup location is also not a bad idea

In DC, we have lots of last minute road closings or there may be a tour group standing in the exact spot you’d planned to pop the question. Discussing a plan B with your photographer is a good idea. We are full of suggestions, so feel free to ask!

Meet with or FaceTime with your photographer to outline clear details in advance

Most importantly, we all need to know what everyone looks like. We generally request a photograph of the two of you so we’re able to pick you both out as easily as possible. You shouldn’t need to pay attention to us once you’ve arrived at your proposal spot and we can’t afford to run around looking for you because we might miss the big moment!

More moving parts = more planning

But, it can also mean an even more special moment!

If you’d like to include both of your families, you’ll need to coordinate with them. If you want them to have a location that is out of sight, to meet you afterward, or whatever the case may be, make sure that everyone knows the plan so you do not have to think about anything but how happy you are when the moment arrives!

Don't spoil the surprise! We won't, either

Each situation is different, but we do our best to blend in. Nothing that screams “something important is happening” if there’s someone clearly waiting for you with a huge camera in their hand!

If you’re proposing at the Jefferson Memorial, we will probably dress like tourists. If you’ve chosen Meridian Hill Park, we’ll probably come in lounge-wear (and remind you that the fountains are not turned on during the Fall-Winter). Planning to propose in a garden or forest? We’ll be wearing green or brown. Our goal is to be invisible and non-invasive - because this is your moment that we are documenting - and it’s not about us.

Stay in touch with your photographer by text during the day

A simple, “We’re on the way,” or, “Just parked! Walking your way now!” and even, “I’m wearing grey pants and a blue button-down,” is extremely helpful to us! That way, we can make sure we’re in position, know what to expect and are ready to go!

The most important thing for us is to capture those raw, vulnerable emotions so that you can treasure them together for the rest of your lives

Bonus Tips:

Save your photographer’s contact info as a friend’s name or something generic so texting doesn’t seem suspicious. A coworker or boss is a good option because you can justify not discussing who is texting you
Set your phone to display “message received” rather than showing the message when you receive a text (do this a few weeks in advance so that it’s not odd if you change it that day)
Taking a selfie on the way out the door and posting to Instagram is never a bad idea - and texting it to us or tagging us is even better!
Planning a fun dinner or date night so that your significant other is dressed up and feels lovely makes doing an engagement session after the proposal just a little bit easier/better. That being said, don’t compromise your plan in order to make this happen; if you two are hikers and you’re popping the question at the top of a trail, don’t suggest wearing heels! You’re definitely going to blow the surprise that way, among other things! haha! You can, however, choose an outfit your significant other would love and a little refresh of makeup - because you both may tear up! - and carry it in a backpack
Feel free to ask about our gear; even if we’ve photographed hundreds of proposal sessions, you have never done this before and you’re only doing it once. We are not offended if you want to know if we’ll be bringing a telephoto lens, lighting, a rain hood (which covers our cameras in wet weather), etc.
Permits are required when photographing in many locations in the DMV area. We have a general idea of where these are required, but we’re happy to help research if we do not know
Do a walk-through of the location with your photographer and discuss where you’ll stand, which way you’ll face, etc.

Remember that this is YOUR moment! Do what feels right for you two!

June + Garrick's Engagement Session | Patterson Park | Baltimore, MD

June and Garrick are just oh-so-in-love

Sara went to University of Maryland College Park with June; they were in the same pledge class in Alpha Omicron Pi. So, this engagement session was uniquely special for us.

How did you two meet?

June: It was the evening of my 30th Birthday. I had just had THE BEST night EVER; having thrown myself a party at Max’s on Broadway. I had several friends from out of town visiting (I was living in Jacksonville, FL at the time). My friends were dying for Stuggy’s, so as they waited in line for their “gourmet” late-night hot dogs, I waited patiently with the remainder of our crew. I'll let Garrick take it from here...

Garrick: It was 2:15am, my friends figured they’d take a stab at convincing a bouncer to let them into a just-closed bar for an ‘after hours’ drink. I was watching their predictable failure, when this cute chick in a flowery dress caught my eye. She was smiling graciously and patiently, at a guy twice her age who’d crawled out of a whiskey bottle to give her his best chat while decked out in Targets Summer of 2013 denim collection and squeaky white dad-from-the-90’s style sneakers.

Meanwhile, this diminutive beta of a guy, who was clearly part of this girls ‘crew’, was doing nothing to help her. Luckily, I had some liquid courage on board, and felt valiant. Apparently my approach conveyed some right, because the guy broke off his slurred monologue and backed away from her slowly.

Her name was June, and for my services I felt her digits were adequate compensation. We started a dialogue. I’m certain my game was golden, but from the next morning, to this day, the specifics remain hazy. I learned she lived in Florida, and rightly felt my efforts rather wasted, but she convinced me to keep her number with the use of logical and reasoned argument with her, and I quote “amazing ass”, at its center.

My buddy managed to capture a picture of the exchange; he shot from the hip so it’s a little catawampus, and it’s not flattering, but it’s all smiles, and it’s a snapshot of the beginning of something wonderful.

Tell us about your proposal!

Ever the prodigious sandbagger, at the beginning of December, Garrick threw me off the scent, telling me there wouldn’t be a proposal in 2017, but to know it was coming soon. Done.

We’ll enjoy the holidays in Spain with his family. After spending 4 relaxing days and 5 wonderful nights with the clan, it was time to head into Barcelona for the remainder of our trip. Garrick's aunt had arranged 8:45pm dinner reservations for us; a welcome date night in the city at a quiet restaurant after days of family vacation.

Garrick suggests leaving early to walk around and grab a glass of wine before dinner. Excited to explore the city and have some alone time with my honey, we head off. We walk by an Arch de Triumf. Not the French one. There’s graffiti on the wall. [I later find out the Arch was the original proposal plan but the graffiti translated to something along the lines of “F*&^ the tourist! Go Home!”] We continue walking and find a cute café ‘Trole’ with tables out front, looking onto the square and Arch. No one is sitting outside.

The temperatures seem frigid to the Spaniards, but to us it was a beautiful, cool evening. Garrick orders two glasses of red wine. We sit, reflecting on the
fun we’ve had so far. Speaking sweetly to each other, as lovers do. He excuses himself to the restroom and to pay the bill [apparently, this was also the perfect opportunity to get the ring out of his pocket]. He returns. We continue to be lovey. Then, he says something along the lines of how amazing he thinks I am, how much he loves me and appreciates how understanding and patient I’ve been and wanting to make it up to me. [At this point he has pulled the ring from his pocket and is presenting it to me.]

I’m not going to lie, I don’t remember the specifics, I kind of blacked out. I could not believe this was happening. He was proposing! It was happening!
Right then! It had been the furthest thing from my brain, not on my radar at all. YES! I said of course! YES! He slides the ring onto my finger, muttering "this bloody thing better fit." It did! We are running late for dinner. We hail a taxi.

At this point, I still think dinner is just the 2 of us. On the way to dinner, Garrick apologizes for being selfish and proposing while we are traveling with his family and not being able to celebrate with mine. I say there will be plenty of time to celebrate when we’re back in the states. Upon arrival, the hostess begins taking us towards the back of the restaurant – ‘oh wonderful, we’ll have a quiet table in the back.’ The hostess continues walking towards a private dining room and I see Garrick’s parents and brother – ‘of course we would celebrate with the Andersons. What fun!’ As I enter the dining room, to the right, I see my mom, dad, sister and brother-in-law, standing, grinning ear-to-ear. Beaming.

I had been bamboozled. I was in a complete and utter state of shock and surprise. My jaw was on the floor and I was speechless. I just kept looking from my family to Garrick and back again. I could not believe my eyes. What my brain knew to be true was not what I was seeing. My parents were supposed to be in Indiana, spending Christmas with my mom’s brother and sister. My sister was supposed to be skiing at Whistler and enjoying a private holiday. Both my mother and sister sent well-crafted text messages keeping up the charade, even making sure to send on east coast time – 6 hours behind Barcelona.

Needless to say, the evening was full of lots of love, laughter, delicious food, lovely wine and a splash of cava.

We are just over-the-moon to be part of June and Garrick's wedding day - and rain or shine, we cannot WAIT!

Jenny + Sam's Fells Point Engagement Session | Baltimore, MD

Katie shares her behind-the-scenes story of this sunrise engagement session!

Talk about a fairytale!

I have known Jenny since we were about 8 years old. We grew up ice skating together at the Columbia Ice Rink where we participated in the Nutcracker and various ice shows every year. I remember one day, she came to me and said she met a new boy. *GASP!!!* We were sophomores in high school at the time, and Sam was the cool older guy (as in, a junior-- haha). By her descriptions, he sounded like he was straight out of a movie. My first thought was that it was too good to be true.

Well, here we are almost 9 years later, and that was never the case. Jenny and Sam have a love that is so strong, supportive, and passionate, and I feel like I can speak on behalf of anyone that knows them when I say they have something that many people strive for. They are basically a walking rom-com.

We're thrilled for Jenny and Sam, and can't wait for their happily ever after. Knowing them, it's just begun ;) To hear their love story from Jenny and Sam's perspective, check our their feature on How He Asked, by The Knot!

Maeg + Kate's Washington DC Skyline Wedding | Newseum Museum

What can we say about Maeg and Kate? Well, we just love these two

(three, including their sweet English-French bulldog mix, Jameson)

We met the ladies and Jameson for drinks in the late afternoon a few days after Maeg's birthday. After talking about how much fun they had celebrating with their friends at a backyard BBQ, we quickly realized that we had SO many things in common and spent most of the time laughing! We stayed up-to-date with them throughout the wedding planning process and loved all of their fun and exciting stories - they are just a riot!

While planning their wedding, Maeg and Kate knew they were going to be transferred out of Washington DC, but had no idea where they would be headed

With a big move on the horizon and a great deal of unknowns, these ladies decided to celebrate their wedding day experiencing their most treasured aspects of the city and their union against a class DC skyline.

We got engaged and started planning our wedding and set a date….. then we started new careers, moved to a new city and lost access to our phones from 8am-6pm everyday and could only get to DC on the weekends. This made it quite difficult to plan a wedding, but luckily we had amazing vendors and help from family and friends to pull everything off.

What was your favorite part about the wedding?

Every single part. My wife looked breathtaking, the weather and venue were perfect and the food was delicious!
The details of their wedding day came together perfectly; their hair, styled by their friend Sasha Moon, was designed to create a circle when the ladies stood together. Neither Maegan or Kate had seen the other’s dress, but we immediately noticed that the back of each gown connected to become a circle, also! We were so happy to be part of so many special, personal moments at Kate and Maeg’s wedding!

On the weekends, Maeg and Kate loved to sit near the columns at the National Arboretum with their sweet French-English Bulldog mix, Jameson, and their friends. They asked their friends to meet them at the Arboretum for some hugs, laughs, and a little “first look” before the wedding ceremony

What were your top 5 favorite moments from your wedding?

Seeing Maegan for the first time by ourselves on the roof of the Newseum in her gorgeous dress will forever be my favorite moment
The ceremony, which was officiated by our best friend, and reading our personal vows to each other in front of our family, friends and the DC skyline

We had a blast at this gorgeous backyard wedding in Kinsale, Virginia. (Um, can this be our backyard, please?) The night before the wedding, we "glamped" with the bride-to-be and her wedding party at a nearby cabin on the water. It was so fun to get to know everyone in a totally different way than we normally have the opportunity to do!

After the wedding, we asked Ben to answer a few questions for our blog and we cant help but share this adorable couple's story - from the day they met to their wedding day! Enjoy!

Sarah + Ben's Wedding! | 04.15.17

We had been dating for a little over 3.5 years when we got engaged. We met when I was working at the Nordstrom e-bar in Tysons Corner and she was shopping there. She paid her sister $20 to give me her number. I like to say I was bought. haha

I have a river house in southern Maryland that has been in my family for about 105 years. After a couple weeks of knowing her, I learned she has a river house in Kinsale, VA (by the northern neck - and where we got married). She pulled it up on google maps and I zoomed out a little. Ironically, her river house is directly across the Potomac River from my house.

Each summer we go to another lake house in northern Michigan which has been in my family for 110 years. We love picking raspberries and visiting nearby vineyards. We enjoy taking our black miniature schnauzer, Sophie, who has an abundance of personality and sass, on walks.

We love finding unique spots to fulfill our photography thirst

I loved that I could look around the yard from one place and see different cohorts of people hanging out and having a great time. I like this because there were so many great places for people to socialize and it was almost like a TV show switching back and forth from scene to scene, from the swing, to the corn hole boards, to the dock, to Maisy, the family dog, doing Goose things (probably looking for scraps) or posing for a photo.

A lot of people say it's hard to take things in during your wedding day, but it seemed like at any given time there were 10 things going on to take in

What were your top 5 favorite moments from your wedding?

Photography was a critical part of our wedding day

I love photography and freezing time for memories, so I think it will make a huge difference. We haven't printed an album yet because Photos from the Harty delivered about 1500 amazing photos and we can't narrow down the list of photos to print to a smaller than phone book size album.

In all seriousness, having artistic wedding photographers was one of our best decisions. Memories will fade, but photos will re-energize them and bring you back to the special day. Brendon and Lauren met through a friend a few years before they started dating. When they reconnected, they began to see each other in a "different light"

Lauren and Brendon's wedding was highly personal and family-oriented - that's just how these two are! They value family and friends above all other things; that's one of the reasons that they wanted their guests to have a place to sleep and enjoy the weekend at Rockwood Manor.

Lauren's mother, being a creative woman who has a love of all things DIY, put together most florals, made the necklaces that Lauren's wedding party wore, and tons of gorgeous decor. Lauren also loves DIY and creates tons of personal gifts for her friend and family. For her wedding party, she created beautiful hangers using paper that she'd found at one of her favorite stores. The girls were allowed to choose any dress that they wanted as long as it was navy blue, which came together perfectly!

Sarah + Paresh's Intimate Wedding | DC War Memorial | Washington, DC

Paresh contacted us just two weeks before the wedding day, and by some twist of fate, we were available!

We have had a VERY busy wedding season with few days "off", so it was surprising that one of the only weekends we had available was the weekend of Sarah + Paresh's wedding! We set up a call with Paresh as soon as he reached out and immediately knew that the stars had aligned perfectly!

Of our many years living and photographing in and around DC, we had never photographed a wedding at the DC War Memorial, but we have always wanted to. It's just so beautiful, quiet, and romantic!

It’s one of the few places in the city where you can be in the shade while still being outside, so you don’t have to worry about a rain plan, you know the lighting will be perfectly even, and of course (the best part): it has that classic “DC” feeling without as much foot traffic as some of the other monuments.

The wedding was so intimate and personal to Sarah and Paresh. The guests consisted solely of the couple's immediate families. Sarah’s family being from the DC area, and Paresh’s family traveling from Wisconsin. The officiant took the time to really get to know Sarah and Paresh so the ceremony was extremely personal and sweet - incorporating both Indian and Christian elements, including their cat Sydney, and things that only someone close to these two would know. We couldn't help but feel like we were part of the family!

Paresh's mother created all of the florals - which were absolutely stunning!

When we were taking portraits of the newlyweds, everyone was waving at them and congratulating them like they were celebrities - it was so adorable!

They invited us to stay for a picnic after the ceremony, which we were more than happy to do! It truly was like we were part of the family! <3

Megan + Tom's Modern Newseum Wedding | Washington, DC

Several years ago, Megan and Tom met at a bar in Washington, DC

(Megan laughingly says, "I know, romantic")

Megan grew up in DC; Tom is Canadian and was in the US for the summer during an internship. They started talking that night and have talked every day since!

The Proposal

Tom spent summer of 2016 in Ghana during graduate school and Megan likes to joke that distance really made the heart grow fonder. He flew back from Africa and had about four days until the couple was leaving for a family vacation, so he had to rush to get the engagement ring in time for the trip.

They first flew to Kansas City for a family wedding, where he asked Megan's parents' permission to propose while the Savary family was at a baseball game (which is perfect for Megan's family because they LOVE baseball, as you will see in this blog).

The next night, Tom caught the garter at a cousin's wedding, which was pretty funny

After the wedding, Tom and Megan flew to Napa, California for a week. Tom woke Megan up from a nap to propose in their hotel room. Megan says that it sounds silly, but it was totally "them". She loved that it was low-key, private, and a total surprise.

There were circles included in almost every aspect of the wedding day. They were inspired by the quote

The universal symbol of a circle represents the notions of totality, wholeness, eternity, and unity.

This perfectly represents Megan and Tom's relationship!

Megan gave her wedding parties customized black-and-white baseball jerseys with the ladies' last name and a number. Megan's jersey was white with black writing; the wedding party had black jerseys with white writing.

When the girls lined up in order, the numbers were 10-8-17 - Megan and Tom's wedding date!

Megan incorporated a pair of her grandma's earrings, and a bracelet she gave Megan when she was 12 around her bouquet. Her grandmother passed away a few years ago, so it was a nice way to have her as a part of the day.

Megan and Tom had been long distance for 95% of their relationship (Megan in DC; Tom in Toronto for graduate school). Finally being in the same place on the wedding day was what Megan was most excited for - it's not surprising that the favorite part of the wedding day was having all of their friends and family in one place!

After 3 years of long distance, finally having everyone in one place was just the greatest

Megan and Tom picked the Newseum because the view encompassed their relationship -- Megan was born in DC, they met in DC, and then obviously the flag at the Canadian Embassy next door. They served poutine to have a little bit of Canada with them in the US.

The script S on the dance floor and end of the aisle runner was the handwriting of the mother of the bride. All of their friends and family recognized that as a "Savary thing"; Megan even has it tattooed behind her ear

Megan and Tom's top five favorite moments of their wedding day were

Their first look (which had the Canadian flag over the embassy blowing in the background), their guests' reaction to the elevator bar (which was incredible), the flashmob during the reception, the poutine (!), and the moment of the night when everything (dinner, speeches, cake, bouquet toss, etc.) was done and it was just time to dance and enjoy the night!

Since their last name is Stark, the couple entered to the Game of Thrones theme song!

We met this adorable couple through a good friend of ours a few years before they got engaged

When Justin and Lauren got engaged, we couldn't have been more excited - until they asked us to photograph their engagement session and then we just about died of happiness!

Sarah Campbell, the co-founder of District Bliss and owner of Pollyanna Events, introduced us to Justin and Lauren a few years ago on Saint Patrick's Day. We had a blast listening to stories, telling stories, and just laughing together. Sarah and Rory brought together a great group of friends and we were thrilled to be there.

During that time period, Lauren and Justin were pounding the pavement in the political arena, which, despite living in the Washington, DC area, is something we dont really talk about or get involved in.

After working on a campaign and hustling hard for their candidate, they fell in love. And, it is BIG love. Lauren's smile lights up the room and her laugh is contagious; when Justin looks at her, you can just see the love. Being with them is always a hoot!

The proposal

When Justin makes a decision, he runs with it. The day he decided he was ready to ask Lauren to marry him, he started shopping for rings. As soon as he had the ring, he couldn't wait to propose

They'd planned to go out for a romantic dinner after Lauren came home from work. She was standing in the closet, selecting an outfit when she turned around to Justin on one knee with this gorgeous ring in his hand

Lauren was completely stunned and beyond thrilled! We can imagine the laughing and happy tears that immediately followed - and it makes us every time we think about it. Of course, their sweet puppy, Kyrie, was also over the moon (which she certainly shared during the wedding ceremony, but more on that later ;))

So, how were the Cleveland Cavaliers involved in this proposal?

Justin said that he knew he was ready to get ready to get married when the Cavs won the championship

After a few minutes of laughing, he explained to us that it was the first day he really felt like he could really see his future. We just loved it, though! They are just the funniest and we cant get enough!

Kathryn + Dan's Army Navy Club Wedding | Washington, DC

In 2017, we had two weddings at the Army Navy Club in Washington, DC - both in March

Each one was totally unique, which was so much fun for us; we love the opportunity to challenge ourselves and be creative, so this was just perfect!

So, Kathryn and Dan. What can we say about these two? Sometimes you meet people and you know you’re meant to be. That happened with Kathryn and Dan when they met, but it also happened with US and this hysterical/brilliant/incredible/sarcastic/kind/wonderful couple. We instantly hit it off and knew they were our soul friends.

We dont know how we got so lucky, but we sure did!

Kathryn: My favorite part was walking in right before we went through the sword detail. Seeing the cookie table, then the cake, and then the ballroom for the first time was just incredible. Looking at all of our family and friends assembled in one area was very exciting, and we were both significantly more relaxed than we had been during the ceremony and family photos. We were definitely ready to celebrate!

Dan: Aside from the obvious of telling the whole world how much I love Kathryn ("Ditto on Dan"-Kathryn), being able to share that incredible venue with all of our family and friends was really incredible. That is probably the only time all those people will be in the same place; certainly the only time that will be the case to celebrate us. Being able to share all of that in such a beautiful space was indescribable. Also, the cookie table and bourbon-infused chocolate cake. Because we know how my sweet tooth goes.

What were your top 5 favorite moments from your wedding?

1. Vows/being bonded fo' life!

2. The Fart Heard 'Round The World! (aka the very loud fart that Kathryn's nephew shared with everyone during the quietest part of the ceremony)

3. Sword Arch (the photos of that are unreal)

4. Dancing, and more specifically, the "Devil Went Down to Georgia" dance led by Kathryn's uncle

5. Coming down the stairs

Kathryn's mom embroidered lace handkerchiefs for Kathryn, the bridesmaids, and her dad...they had Irish lace on them and it's a family tradition to carry those with the bouquets. Kathryn's dad also ALWAYS carries a cloth handkerchief on him, so it was absolutely fitting that he have one on him for his girls, "just in case" someone needed an extra. We always do.

Kathryn's bouquet was also wrapped in a piece of lace from her maternal grandmother's (very epic) wedding gown.

Kathryn's mom insisted on doing a groom's cake for Dan. She also insisted on it being a surprise, which Kathryn thought was just the sweetest thing, and classically her mom. Kathryn loved how we were able to incorporate some of Dan's favorite flavors (chocolate and bourbon) with the Marines and his alma maters. And more bourbon. (Pretty sure half the family thinks we're alcoholics.) Kathryn and her mom strongly considered doing a bleeding armadillo cake as an homage to one of her family's favorite movies, Steel Magnolias, but we didn't want to horrify Dan's family with too many of our Southern traditions...we figured the bourbon and Charlie Daniels were enough.

Kathryn: My favorite series of photographs is of us walking down the stairs (both the shots from above and when we are actually walking--so beautiful), and I loved that you captured those last few private moments before we walked in! Also, it was really cool to see everyone dressed in black tie. Our guests all looked so spiffy, and we were just so thrilled with how it all came together!

The sword arch is an incredible tradition, complete with Kathryn getting "welcomed into the Marine Corps" via sword swat on the ass, was another tradition we insisted on doing. We were lucky enough to have all but one branch of the military represented, and were so touched that some of our dearest friends performed that service for us. Similarly, we used Dan's sword to cut the cake, which was just so fun!

Dancing to "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" is a family tradition on Kathryn's mom's side of the family--when they were all little, her uncle, who was a Naval pilot at the time, took the kids for a ride on base in his Jeep and BLASTED that song. Kathryn, her sisters, cousins all came back having learned the words to that song, in addition to our very first curse word. Since then, it's been a tradition for her uncle and his boys to get up and "play the fiddle" while the rest of them dance and sing a long. Dan's family was definitely very confused by this tradition.

What was the planning process like? Did you run into any obstacles? How did you overcome them?

Just kidding--the planning process was smooth-ish. We definitely had some bumpy moments, but trying to set and stick to deadlines absolutely helped us along. Kathryn's family mocked the planning spreadsheet (let's not forget that Kathryn is a consultant by profession and her colleagues thought this was a GREAT way to manage things), but everyone was appreciative that activities and responsibilities were spelled out.

Kathryn: To be honest, I think the obstacles really came from just not communicating enough or advocating enough for what we wanted. Getting out of your own head and realizing that asking for something specific doesn't make you a Bridezilla--especially when they're not unrealistic requests--was probably the hardest part for me.

Dan: Would just add that Kathryn is insanely well organized and had this thing planned to a standard that would rival most military operations. ("Wow, that might be one of the top five nicest things you have ever said to me."-Kathryn)

People aren't kidding when they say that your wedding day is a blur. Your gifted photography proved an excellent photographer is necessary

Mervis Diamond Importers Celebrates Seven Years of Equality with a Pop-Up Wedding!

After entering the Mervis Diamond Importers Pop-Up Wedding Contest, these ladies didn't really give it much thought. They had never won anything like that before and assumed that this time would be the same.

Until they won the competition

Let us back up a little bit. Mervis Diamond Importers, a family-owned business, decided to celebrate seven years of marriage equality by hosting a pop-up wedding at their store on K Street in Washington, DC. In celebration of seven years of same-sex marriage being legal in Washington, D.C., Mervis Diamond Importers has offered one lucky couple a pop up wedding.

Mervis pulled together an enthusiastic group of the top equality-minded wedding professionals in the DMV and said, "Let's do this!" The contest began in March, and Jonna Kate and Kimberly Sullivan found out that they'd won the contest just one week before the big day.

So, this sweet couple rushed down from Pennsylvania to get married in DC without really knowing what was waiting for them. What they found was crazy - crazy awesome

We were honored and obviously said yes, even though we didn't really know the details of the day. We had no idea how elaborate and beautiful the celebration would be and we couldn't have been more pleased to see so many talented like-minded vendors when we arrived!

We headed to meet Kimberly and Jonna as TMAK Artistry put the final touches of makeup on and got ready for their first look

We wandered through the Beacon Hotel and then to Thomas Circle to enjoy the cherry blossoms before heading to Mervis Diamond Importers to prepare for the pop-up wedding ceremony

An incredible team of vendors, Washingtonians, and people who happened to pass the pop-up wedding on their way home or to the metro came together to celebrate Kimberly and Jonna's wedding in Farragut Square

As the couple said, "I do!" cheering erupted from the crowd; hugs, dancing, and happy tears surrounded them. It was a truly beautiful moment in DC.

The reception at Mervis Diamond Importers was beautiful and full of positive energy and love

We couldn't be happier for Kimberly and Jonna! Congratulations and cheers to years and years of spontaneity and surprises!

You know you want your photographs to be gorgeous, but everyone has a budget

Wondering when to skimp and when to spurge without compromising your pictures? The Goodshuffle team has got you covered!

There are tons of articles and blog posts about where you should splurge and where to save when it comes to your wedding. Almost all will tell you that a photographer is an important expense, as your photos are meant to last a lifetime; with photography, you really are getting what you pay for. What nearly all of these articles neglect to point out, however, is the importance of what is in your photos.

We may not think of it often, but event rentals are one of the major components of wedding photographs; event furniture, decor, and other details are going to be in the background (or foreground) of just about every photograph.

What’s the point of splurging on an amazing photographer if images of your wedding day feature eye sores in the background?

Of course, not everyone has the budget to buy or rent the high-end rentals for every element of a wedding, so we’re giving a few pointers on where to spend a little extra and where to be more frugal while still having the best possible wedding photographs!

Where to Splurge

Chairs. We wrote this blog post about chairs, and the main takeaway was as follows: You have as many chairs as you have people at your wedding. There’s simply no escaping the fact that chairs will be in almost every photo (of both the ceremony and the reception). You will wince if every photo includes a chair that looks like it was pulled from a town hall meeting instead of a once-in-a-lifetime celebration.

Even if the chair is not the focal point, they will still be visible

Centerpieces. Photographs of the reception table are a must and the centerpieces are the focal point of your tablescape. Not to mention, the first thing that wedding guests do (after grabbing a drink) is visit their table, ooo and ahh over how beautiful everything is, and put their belongings at their place.

Your centerpiece sets the tone of the entire table, and the difference between a dinky, cheap looking one (because we all know that just because something is expensive, it may not look like it is high quality in your photographs) and even a middle-of-the-line piece is enormous.

Focal points. Think about the places the most important photos will be taken: standing in front of their loved ones to say, “I do!”, guest reactions, people huddled around the bar chatting, your first dance, you and your fiancé(e) cutting the cake, and ALL of the details...

Whether it’s a gorgeous archway for the ceremony, a unique bar for the reception, or a floral backdrop or beautiful stand for the cake table, drapery for your ceremony or reception - these are the photos that are bound to be framed on your walls or included in your premium wedding album for years to come.

Even adding a single exquisite piece that draws the eye will not only make a statement as guests enter and enjoy the evening, but it will be featured prominently in what are sure to be your stunning photographs

Unique details. These days, we’re all about spicing up weddings with details that represent each individual couple’s personality. From nautical lanterns representing a love of sailing to 1950s diner props that memorialize a first date or even vintage bicycles for the lifetime bikers; these are important personal touches that your photographer is going to want to capture in detail, making quality essential.

Where to Save

Tablecloths. Often, quality comes across in the feel of linens, more than the appearance. Sure, a specialty tablecloth design, such as a pintuck,is quite visible, but if you’re going for a simple look in your linens, a polyester linen will be far more affordable than a cotton cloth. This difference will not be visible in photographs, making it a great place to save some of your budget for whatever you two feel is more important!

Dinnerware. Not only is there only minimal difference between the fancy and the more “plain” plates (a gold rim, a charger, etc.), but the only time you’ll see a photograph of plates or the chargers is if you’re having a seated dinner and your photographer takes detailed pictures of the tables before food is served.

If you’re doing a buffet, or if you’d prefer a photo of the plates with your very expensive food served, you’ll never need to know if the plates were less expensive; people will be looking at the food and the plates will not even be on their radar during dinner or in the images.

Tables. Tables can almost always be covered by a tablecloth. There are, of course, exceptions. If you want a beautiful farm table,a unique, vintage look, or tables that glow in the dark, you’ll have to spend a little more mulah. You can also consider mixing and matching, using some high end tables for the cocktail hour or the dessert table, but keeping more simple tables for dinnertime (when they’ll be covered in food, glasses, centerpieces, and utensils, anyhow).

Water Barrel/Tent Weight Covers. Tents that are set up on a flat surface require water barrels. You can buy covers for these plastic barrels, or try using flowers or other decor as decoys for these slight eyesores.

Interestingly, most photographers will tell you that they tend to blend into the background best if you leave them as plain as possible. Besides, the vast majority of your photos will be taken inside the tent where your guest are and your guests will generally either be standing, sitting, or dancing in front of them, making the barrels almost invisible in your photographs.

There are so many ways to stay within your budget; as long as you have a good photographer, you can adjust or flex any of these items above to create a beautiful wedding ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception space.

Christie + Andrew's Wedding at Celebrations at the Bay | Pasadena, MD

Ahhh, these two... What do we even say about these two!? Let's start from the beginning — and we're talking the VERY beginning

A little background info: Andrew is Katie's older brother. That's probably the first thing we should throw out there. And, Sara is an honorary Lingan, just like Katie is an honorary Hartenstine/Alepin. We spend so much time together and we know so much about each other's families, lives - everything! - that we feel very connected to the important people in the other's life.

This was even more personal than the average wedding - and certainly a unique situation!

Christie and Andrew - they are just so adorable (like all Lingans are)

When Katie was a baby, before she even had teeth, Andrew tried to feed her crackers. Obviously, their parents stopped him and explained that Katie couldn’t chew and not to do that anymore. But, all he was trying to do was be a good brother. He thought if there was even a slight chance that Katie wanted a cracker, that she should have a cracker.

As irrelevant as that story may seem to a blog about Andrew and Christie's wedding, it’s important to know that Andrew's always been that kind of guy; the guy that wants to make sure his loved ones get exactly what they want.

When Christie came into the picture, everyone knew she wouldn’t be leaving. She not only fit into their family right away, but she brought out parts of Andrew that no one had never seen before. Katie immediately grew close to Christie, but even more surprisingly, she grew closer to her brother.

When Christie and Andrew got engaged, there wasn't a question what Katie wanted to give them as their wedding gifts: an engagement session in Owego, NY, where Christie grew up.

Christie has made a home in the Washington DC area, but still feels very connected to Owego and her family. Katie was beyond excited to photograph her brother and soon-to-be sister there. After all, Christie's brothers and their spouses have wedding bands - and most also have engagement rings - from the same small town shop in Owego, Van Horn Jewelers.

Because Fall is very important to the couple, everyone jumped through hoops to find a weekend where heading to upstate New York was an option. They left on a Friday, returning on a Sunday; staying with Christie's family, being surrounded by the lush Fall colors, enjoying the tiny town of Owego, and eating Momma Testa's cooking was only minor perks of this destination engagement session. The engagement session itself could not have been more fun or filled with more laughter!

Soon afterward, Andrew and Christie decided that they wanted a Fall wedding with beautiful golds, oranges, reds, purples, crimson, and all the colors that Christie associated with growing up in Owego during the Fall. However, Andrew met Christie at Virginia Tech and they did NOT want their wedding to look like it was Hokie-themed. While they love VT, they didn't want their wedding to be a big celebration of their college; Christie and Andrew wanted it to be about the two of them. The only thing that was related to VT was Christie’s garter.

The wedding was exactly what Christie and Andrew had hoped for: tasteful, beautiful, elegant, and surrounded by loved ones

Christie’s grandmother was very important to her and she knew she wanted to have a piece of her grandma with her on her wedding day. She decided to wear her grandma’s pearl necklace, and got Van Horn Jewelers to custom make a matching bracelet for and all the bridesmaids.

A few weeks after the wedding at a family gathering, someone asked, “If you could do the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?” Christie and Andrew both responded, “Nope. It was perfect.”

We know Andrew and Christie have many, many long, happy years ahead - and we know that whenever Christie needs a cracker, Andrew will be sure to have one ready for her! :)

When Pammie and Blake got engaged, the natural venue choice was simple: Blake's childhood home, Flora Corner Farm

There are photos and paintings in the bridal suite of Blake and his brothers when they were kids; what we thought was so cool about that was that no other Flora Corner Farm bride - and few brides in general! - can say that their hubby was featured on the walls of their venue. lol And, just LOOK how cute this is!

Flora Corner Farm has been in Blake's family for over 150 years. After his sister got engaged in 2010, the barn was converted into a venue space to host their loved ones. From there, the progression was natural: the former Principal and Art Teacher decided to open their family home and begin hosting weddings!

While every wedding is special to the family, none more so than their children's weddings. So, Blake and Pammie's wedding was incredibly sentimental, emotional, and intimate. Their families were truly becoming one and embracing their love!

The day started out with steady rain that seemed as if it was never going to end

When we arrived, it was raining. One of the things Pammie was most excited about was their outdoor ceremony set-up.

Pammie was surprisingly calm about the weather, especially considering how important it was that the ceremony be outside. The rain may have been coming down pretty heavily outside, but inside everything was going perfectly!

The dress that Pammie's former ice skating coach made for her was just so absolutely stunning, everyone looked perfect, and the ladies enjoyed some mimosas and laughed while putting the finishing touches on and heading to the ceremony.

The chairs were out and the rain was coming down, but she made it a point not to make a decision about moving the location indoors until the very last second.

And, then, the rain stopped!

Luckily, about 5 minutes before they were going to start seating guests; not only did the rain stop, but the SUN came out! It was truly a wedding miracle. It was still wet, but everything looked lush, the flowers were vibrant, and it was almost even more romantic than the day would have been if the weather had been perfect throughout the day! Hooray!

Now, this whole rain situation did pose one obstacle: the guests were already seated, but Pammie was still in the house because she'd been waiting out the rain. In order for her to walk down the aisle, she needed to make it to the barn, but the only way to get to the barn would be to walk past all of the guests. With the help of the venue’s amazing planner, Amanda, we devised a plan to distract the guests.

Our rockstar of a photographer, Chris, stood on the opposite side of the ceremony space and asked everyone to face him for a big group photo. In the mean time, Pammie’s mom and bridesmaids carried a sheet in front of her so Pammie could sneak from the house to the barn.

It was so successful, we can’t even explain how it worked, but I don’t think we’ve ever laughed so hard at a wedding before!

The ceremony started as soon as Pammie was safely past the guests and the sun was shining - what's better than that? Having the couple's best friend, Neil, marry them!

It was like a little boys dream come true when Pammie and Blake asked me to be their officiant. I couldn’t be more honored to be standing here in front of the two of them today.

I met Pammie about 7 years ago and our first experiences were not the most pleasant. Her first impression of me was the guy who woke her up from her afternoon nap before class. From there I was doomed. The next couple of months we only exchanged a few words, mostly dirty looks whenever I would come over to her dorm room. I don’t remember any significant event happening but one day, Pammie and I were pleasant, marking it the start of our friendship.

Over the years, Blake has shaped up to be one of the finest people I have had the privilege to know. He’s honest to a fault, courageous, sincere, loyal and intelligent. You’ve both chosen to wear rings as a reminder of these promises. People often say wedding bands are a perfect circle, with no beginning and no end. But these rings did have a beginning. The stones were formed a long time ago deep within the earth. Eventually, a series of lucky events caused them to rise to the surface, where someone dug them up. Metal was then liquefied in a furnace at a thousand degrees — molded, cooled, and painstakingly polished. Something beautiful was made from raw elements.

Love is like that. It comes from humble beginnings, and through a combination of serendipity and effort, imperfect beings shape it into something extraordinary. It’s the process of making something beautiful where there was once nothing at all. As you look at these rings over the years, I hope you remember that. You’ve created something invaluable, and just as I know you will protect these rings, I’m confident you will protect the commitments you’ve made to one another today.

To celebrate their unity, Pammie and Blake chose to plant a tree using soil from Blake’s home in Mechanicsville and Pammie’s home in Laurel, Maryland

The ceremony could not have been more perfect. You can read it in its entirety here.

This wedding was also very personal and close to Katie's heart

Now, to give you a little bit of background, Katie and Pammie skated on an ensemble team together. Ensemble is also referred to as "theatre on ice" where they would complete a 6-minute group program (not to be confused with synchronized skating because they weren't linked up and weren't all doing the same things at the same time).

Katie's mom and Pammie's mom were pretty much the parents in charge. They would organize all of our fundraisers, competitions, team trips, etc. And, Pammie and Katie were typically the ones that were sent out to pass out flyers for fundraisers together. Katie still remembers not being old enough to drive, but going out with Pammie for a day to different restaurants and local businesses passing out flyers for their Bingo fundraiser event.

So, being Pammie's wedding photographer was just ... really special!

Everyone was having so much fun and rocking out on the dance floor that they didn't want to leave at the end of the night! And, we cant blame them! We were having a BLAST!

The sparkler exit was just the icing on the cake (even though, ironically, they chose to have pies rather than a wedding cake lol)! Everyone was laughing, having a great time, and it was clearly quite a creative crowd!

We couldn't have been happier to be a part of this special day! It truly was a dream come true! :)

Jennifer + Moira's Rainy Wedding Day - with First Look at The Supreme Court | Washington, DC

Congratulations to these two beautiful brides!

The rain didn't dampen this wedding day one bit. In fact, we don't think it would have been the same without it!

The story of how these stunning brides met, their proposals, and pretty much every detail about these two ladies is nothing short of amazing

Jen and Mo met on a popular dating website. For the record, Jen messaged Mo first because she liked Mo's smile and her espoused love of theme parties. Mo responded because she thought Jen was cute and was intrigued by her wit and charm.

Their first date was at Nellie's Sports Bar. Mo was 40 minutes late, and Jen wore a hideous red hoodie. While waiting for Mo to arrive, Jen warned her that the bar was filled with dogs that night. Worried that she was about to meet a judgey jerk, Mo was relieved when she arrived and saw that Nellie's had partnered with the Washington Humane Society to sponsor a pet adoption night at the bar.

Their proposal story is also totally adorable

On one of their first dates, Jen surprised Mo with a picnic dinner and a movie on the National Mall. That movie was The Goonies, one of Jen's all time favorites. Seeing that Mo liked the movie, too, Jen knew they could continue in the relationship. Flash forward three years later to July 2015: while on the West Coast to visit Mo's sister and family, and on their way to Portland for a wedding, Jen convinced Mo to take a day trip to visit Astoria and Cannon Beach, Oregon -- two locations featured prominently in the film.

They visited The Goonies House, the jail (now turned film museum), Mo's Restaurant, Cannon Beach, and Ecola State Park. At the last stop, Jen took Mo to a bench overlooking the Pacific Ocean and played for her a slideshow with their favorite song, "I Want to Dance With Somebody". Jen told Mo she wanted to dance with her for the rest of their lives and asked Mo to marry her. Mo said YES!

Not only was their first look meaningful because of the location, but their wedding parties surprised them with a double rainbow of umbrellas!

We lined them up while the brides were taking some photographs at the top of the stairs, so when they turned around to head back to the limo, they were greeted with a little ray of sunshine!

Before heading to the wedding, we swung by Nellies for a break from the rain, some celebratory beverages, and to revisit the spot these two ladies met

D + E 's Engagement Session | Meridian Hill Park, Adams Morgan, and Home | Washington, DC

Wow! It's been a LONG time since we've had a moment to sit down and put together a blog! Brace yourselves - not only is this a SUPER sweet engagement session, but we also have TONS of blogging to do in the coming weeks (we have had a whole lot of weddings, engagement sessions, and more this summer)!

Congratulations to Danielle and Eddie (and Luke)!

Imagine coming home from a stressful week at work to your loved one on one knee, holding a ring AND a puppy!

When we heard this story, we totally fell in love with these two (or should we say three)!

Danielle came home one evening to a brand new puppy, flowers, candles, and an engagement ring from the love of her life. Is there anything better than that?!

The screenshots below were pulled from the bride-to-be's instagram because we just LOVE this story!

It wasn’t even a question that Danielle and Eddie wanted their puppy, Luke, to be a part of their engagement session - and we couldn't have been more excited to include this spunky pup!

We love an engagement session that is sentimental; that’s exactly what this couple had planned. They chose Meridian Hill Park because it is a special spot for these two; they often stroll through the park with Luke. It's a quiet little haven in the hustle and bustle of the city.

While we photographed at Meridian Hill Park, Danielle’s mom acted as the designated leash-holder when Luke wasn't being photographed. She even came into the city to be part of this fun day! So perfect. We loved it!

What's an engagement session without the "I'm a model, you know what I mean, and I do my little turn on the catwalk"?

We wandered through the park until we found the perfect spot for a little break. Danielle and Eddie spread out a blanket that Eddie's grandmother had made.

Annnnd of course we had to make the Luke-face!

We back-tracked to Danielle and Eddie’s home to take some more intimate photos and pop some bubbly on the porch. These two couldn’t have been more fun. The plan was to photograph a little more of a champagne "explosion", but without even trying to pop the cork, the first one flew out; Eddie’s reaction was absolutely priceless. We thought it was even more fun than if we had been able to pop the cork the way the couple had hoped!

We also snapped some photographs in their apartment. They toasted with champagne glasses that Danielle's mother and father used at their own wedding!

We decided to venture back out and reminisce about how these two me. It was hysterical, romantic, and totally adorable!

Our last stop was the location where these two met - playing kickball

Right next to this Adams Morgan kickball field, there is a mural that says, “Everyday I see something new.” It is totally fitting for these two considering they met there, and it was the start of their relationship!

We cannot wait for Danielle and Eddie's wedding! We just know it's going to be AMAZING!

Ellicott City, Maryland | A memory of the place that inspired us to become photographers

After the destructive flash flood last Saturday night in Ellicott City, Maryland, our hearts are broken

One of the many things that we have in common is that when we first began photographing, this was our favorite spot to shoot. Ellicott City had everything. Main Street had a row of little shops, a cute bridge, and if you walked down further toward River Road, you would find yourself in nature with tons of trees, and streams leading into the Patapsco River.

Sara has developed dozens of rolls of film taken in this cute little town, starting in high school and continuing through her Masters degree, when she began using both digital images and 35mm film.

Ellicott City Ellicott City Ellicott City Katie (who photographed all of the beautiful images in this blog post) transitioned from digital photography to film in her senior year of high school and frequented Ellicott City for projects or even just to wander and soak up the cute little antique stores, coffee shops, and all the beauty surrounding her.

From photographer meet-ups and client meetings at Bean Hollow, to shopping at Sweet Elizabeth Jane and all of the other amazing small businesses, to photographing friends up and down Main Street, Old Ellicott City continued to be Katie's favorite place.

In the blink of an eye, it was destroyed; and we don’t know what to do, other than share a bunch of the images taken over the years, in this adorable historic town.

Ellicott City Ellicott City We hope they are able to repair this adorable, historic town, and that we’ll be strolling down Main Street with our friends sometime in the not-so-far in future.

Well, the big day finally arrived and we were so happy to celebrate with these two lovebirds!

Both Marianna and Nick come from very large Italian families, so there were tears of joy and laughter all around us as we captured each special moment. While we has a blast being among the hustle and bustle of family and friends, it was wonderful to take a big of time with the bride and groom to really absorb that absolute, unconditional - and occasionally completely ridiculously hilarious - love that they have for one another.

Sneak Peek: Seamus and Jared's National Harbor Wedding

Congratulations to Seamus and Jared!

It's been awhile since we've blogged. Like, a really, really long time. And, we know it. BUT, it's because we've been SO BUSY with incredible weddings like this! Frankly, we got so wrapped up in celebrating love with these amazing couples that we completely forgot about sharing our photographs. Whoops! Now we should probably get to some blogging with a promise to be better! :)

Seamus and Jared are just the sweetest! They're the kind of people who call, rather than text or email, and they're the kind of people who make you happy to be around. They came into DC from New Orleans, LA to celebrate their wedding - and, frankly, we couldn't have been happier that they did!

They celebrated their nuptials at Immanuel Church on the Hills in Virginia before heading to The Gaylord Hotel in National Harbor for some yummy food and good times with their closest friends and family!

These romantic portraits just take our breath away; we cant get over how adorable these guys are! We're still editing the photographs and putting everything together (hence the sneak peek...crafty, right?) and the hardest part is choosing which photographs are best because every photograph of these two is just so perfect!

We LOVED working with these grooms - and their adorable family - and cannot wait to share more photographs of both their rehearsal dinner and wedding day!

Surprise Proposal among the Cherry Blossoms in Vienna, Virginia

What better way is there to propose than with a chrome rose ring box?

A few years ago, Ben bought two chrome rose boxes. He gave one rose to Sarah with earrings inside and saved the other; even though they hadn't been dating too long, he knew he wanted to marry her.

They met while Ben was working at the Nordstrom e-bar in Tysons and she was shopping there. Sarah paid her sister $20 to give him her number. Ben likes to tease that he "was bought." lol

Sarah attends Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, so the couple travels back and forth, but they don't mind - they're just happy when they are together!

After dating for almost four years, Ben knew that it was time and began planning this beautiful proposal for Sarah.

Ben knew he wanted to propose in a romantic, quite spot near the water. Both Sarah and Ben's families have houses on the Potomac River - one in southern Maryland, the other along the northern neck in Virginia. One day, they were looking on google maps and realized that their houses are DIRECTLY across the river from one another! How crazy/adorable is that?!

The proposal was as romantic as can be; they walked through the park, enjoying the cherry blossoms and being together. When they stopped to look at the water, Ben knew it was the right moment. He had hidden the rose in his shirt before popping the question! It took every bit of effort for him to not be obvious that he was hiding something. When Ben pulled the rose out of his pocket, Sarah immediately knew what was happening and couldn't have been happier!

It was perfect! Congratulations, Ben and Sarah! Cheers to a long, happy life together! <3

Cherry Blossoms in the Rain | Tidal Basin | Washington, DC

When you've lived in the DMV area long enough, you know that the weather can change at a moment's notice - or without any notice at all. You also know that you may check the weather while it's raining only to see that TWC app says that there is 0% chance of rain (insert Mean Girls joke here).

Everyone here loves to see the cherry blossoms, even if we complain about the parking, getting there by metro, and the tourists. And, all of us will complain.

The peak of the cherry blossoms kicks off the tourist season and it breaks us in hard and fast after the slow days of winter. It's madness. But, they're beautiful and somehow we all end up finding our way to the tidal basin at one point or another to wander. It's a time that reminds us why living in DC has its own little magic. It's easy to forget that when your typical day includes walking past the monuments that people come from all over the world to see.

On this particular day, we arrived at the tidal basin, camera in hand, with no real plan. Not surprisingly, every grove was peppered with tourists and locals. We decided to explore and see if we could find a low-traffic nook to post up in for awhile and relax.

Suddenly, we looked up and everyone was gone. It was eerily quiet.

And then we heard the first clap of thunder.

See, everyone else had been looking up at the blossoms and seen the sky rapidly changing, but we were looking for a nice spot on the ground, completely oblivious to the thunderstorm swirling to life overhead. The clouds quickly darkened the sky. Clearly, it was about to pour.

Not really having any other option at this point, we found some shelter and waited to get completely drenched.

The storm hit. Hard. The water in the tidal basin was rapidly rising and overtaking the sidewalks. The rain weighed on the trees and they bent to meet the water just over the edge of the sidewalk.

It got dark - really dark; but as quickly as it came, the storm cleared. We were left alone, mostly dry, among the cherry blossoms.

It made for some really cool images (thank goodness for rain hoods so our gear stayed dry) before, during, and after the storm. Honestly, they are probably the most intriguing photographs we have taken of the cherry blossoms. So, it was weathering through a little rain. :)

We met Leah through Katie, one of the Photos from the Harty ladies. We were immediately impressed with her attention to detail and willingness to jump in to help out in whatever way she can; when you need anything, this gal is always the first to volunteer. Add that to her fantastic photo skills and you’ve got a killer teammate!

We were really happy that she was able to photograph our first Baltimore Vendor Social at Pixilated HQ a few weeks ago. This will not be the last time we work with this talented photographer!

Meet Leah Coppotelli Photography!

When did you decide you wanted to open your own company?

I guess I decided I wanted to take a step up in my photography when I realized I could take everything I’d been teaching myself over the years and help people, give them something to remember in the future. Photographs are akin to memories and you never know when you’ll want to look back on a moment and have something to remember it by.

How did you come up with the name of your business?

This may sound silly but I didn’t want people to focus too much on the name of my business, I wanted them to be captivated by the photos. I guess for me the idea of naming my business something other than my name demanded good reasoning behind whatever I chose. I couldn’t come up with anything that really represented my photographs, my brand; I’m still developing my brand, so I chose something simple to serve as an introduction to my work.

Is there anything you’d else you’d like to share about your photography?

I am also a fine art conceptual photographer. When some people hear that about me I think they get confused, but to me whether it’s a wedding, an engagement, of a something from my imagination, they’re all stories that need to be told. Sara has been an invaluable resource for me. It’s not often you find someone so willing to bring in a stranger (well, despite a mutual friend) and be 100% willing to teach her your ways and open her eyes to your system of doing things – despite any possible complications. She had faith in me, in my work, and for that I couldn’t be more thankful.

What is your favorite part of being a photographer?

My selfish answer would have to be that my favorite part about what I do is getting to tell someone’s story. However, I love knowing I’m helping document happy memories.

Do you have a favorite memory you’d like to share?

Honestly, my favorite story is from a wedding I shot with Photos from the Harty last fall that was full of love and amazing people. At one point, the mother of the the bride came up to us and thanked us profusely for helping to make the couple’s day perfect. I remember that I was so choked up by how genuinely she said it; all I could think to myself was, I should be thanking her for letting us witness and help document something as magical as all the love – and fun – everyone shared.

What is your favorite part of working with Photos from the Harty?

Weddings with Photos from the Harty are the best because the ladies really get to know their couples and seeing them interact over the course of a wedding day just looks like old friends, just chatting and laughing. It’s amazing the affection they have for each of their couples.

I have a feeling walls could be falling down or 25 worst-case-scenarios could be happening on a wedding day and one of the ladies would still be talking and laughing with the couple like nothing was going wrong. To the ladies of Photos from the Harty, it is always all about making the couple’s day the best it can be.

Katie and Ken's Blue Mountain Wedding | Whitehall Manor, VA

Katie and Ken... oh these two. You would think they jumped right out of a fairytale book into real life. Seriously.

Everything about this wedding, from the venue, to the details of Katie's dress was nothing short of elegant. She had the jacket custom-made to compliment her dress. The wedding had a sunflower theme because they are Katie's favorite flower; her engagement ring is designed like a sunflower and their engagement session took place on a sunflower farm!

Katie met Ken at George Mason University where Katie was on the dance team. Katie's "big sister" just so happened to be Ken's younger sister! See? Fairytale book, right!?

We also met Katie in college, and as she was gearing up to graduate, we all knew that the engagement was going to come soon, but we had no idea how soon (and neither did she)! Ken's original plan was to wait to propose until Katie graduated, but one day a few months before graduation, he realized he couldn't wait any longer! They were engaged before Katie finished college, and it was totally fitting. They were so in love then, and are clearly even more in love now.

We have never met two people who are more excited to be together. First, Ken spontaneously proposes one day, surprising everyone including himself, because he's too excited. Fast forward to their wedding, Ken's impatience to propose was matched by Katie when she practically RAN down the isle. Okay, maybe she didn't run... but she walked faster than any bride I've seen, and her facial expressions just screamed, "LET ME MARRY HIM ALREADY." The moment Ken saw his gorgeous bride, he was in tears and so was everyone else. Katie was just ready to be pronounced as husband and wife which was evident by the determination in her eyes as she walked down the aisle and throughout the ceremony.

One day, a few months before their wedding, we were talking to Katie about the details of her wedding day, and what details mattered the most to her in terms of being photographed. We melted when we heard her response: "I don't care. I just want to marry Ken!"

Now they have a new home for their cute little family and their adorable rescue dog, Daisy!

Happy President's Day!

As you probably know, we love snow. There's something kind of magical about celebrating President's Day in the nation's capital as a blanket of snow quiets the city. As we sit and watch the snow fall with a steaming cup of coffee in-hand, it kind of seems like the perfect way to appreciate this day.

We hope that you all are doing something to enjoy this day with loved ones. If you are out and about, stay safe and warm! If you're in the city, we hope you have a chance to swing by the Dupont Circle snowball fight. If you're not planning to participate and just want to scope it out, we'd recommend taking hot chocolate - or a hot toddy - with you. ;)

Happy Super Bowl Sunday!

Today marks the 50th Super Bowl!

For those of you who don't know, Sara comes from a BIG football family. Her father played at the collegiate level, as did two of her cousins (one maternal, one paternal) who went on to play for the Bears. Needless to say, Sara was born and raised on football. And, she loves it.

Katie, however, was into dance and figure skating and she grew up. Her boyfriend (who you might remember from their adorable photoshoot in the snow) LOVES sports, but he prefers futbol to football. After being exposed to all the fun and excitement that is soccer, Katie shares Arthur's love of sports.

As the east coast got hit with Storm Jonas over the weekend, we've been stuck inside. While Sara decided to stay put in Dupont (let's be honest, she didn't really even believe the storm was going to hit until it did; maybe she's jaded from so many promises of snow that never came, like Snowquester). Katie decided to hunker down in the Northern Virginia suburbs with her man so that even if they did nothing, they were at least doing nothing, together.

"We've watched more movies this weekend than we've probably watched in the past 6 months, and we are NOT complaining! It was so nice to have a break, but yesterday we finally decided it was time to get out of the house. He was such a good sport and let me take photos of him. This is a RARE occurrence, so you better believe I cherished every second of it." ;)

Now, you may be slightly skeptical about the whole "he hates having photos taken" thing if you remember him as the "groom" from our romantic boho styled shoot from last spring. But, we can assure you, that took a LOT of begging from Katie and a no-is-not-an-option attitude from Sara!

"I think I'm allowed to brag, here... Isn't he just so good looking!?"

Rachel's Proposal Story

Chris and I went to Orlando for my cousin's wedding in last November. We decided to make a vacation out of the trip and ended up driving to St. Pete Beach, on the gulf coast, to spend a few days enjoying the sun and sand before heading back to chilly Maryland. We'd heard that St. Pete's white sand beaches were beautiful and that the sunsets over the water were breath-taking. One evening, we were getting ready to go to dinner and Chris suggested we go out to the beach to watch the sunset. We walked out to the sand, grabbed a seat, and chatted about nothing in particular as the sun sank toward the sea. Just before the sun slipped over the horizon, Chris got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I, of course, said yes! We were both super excited and totally giddy about our engagement, we went to the hotel restaurant and celebrated with some champagne.

You know when the smoke clears and the sparkle of the holidays starts to fade?

Suddenly, you have time to actually get to reflect on the last crazy, busy year of your work life? Well, HOLY COW!

Today, we started a list of blog features, publications, magazine articles, websites, etc. We could not BELIEVE the number of images, weddings, proposals, events, portraits, engagements, and even commercial photography have been picked up and featured on blogs! Some of which we didn't even know about! And, we are always flattered when the talented vendors we work with choose to use our images to showcase their own work. It feels awesome to be able to support our frendors! ;) It seems we had a pretty significant spike in website features this year, too!

Capitol Romance, Kim & Greg’s Patriotic, Red White & Blue DC Wedding at Hotel Monaco

As soon as we met this bride-to-be, we knew we were going to publish this wedding. The plans were just too good! Lucky for this amazing couple - and for us! - everything came together perfectly on their wedding day! The tea-length dress set the tone for a night of dancing while showing off the her stunning blue pumps. The red, white, and blue theme was done perfectly and Hotel Monaco was the perfect venue to showcase their DC-style. The surprise American flag sunglasses were a hit - and an excellent way to end the evening! Photographing this wedding was a ball!

SPRING RHAPSODY: A ROMANTIC STYLED SHOOT AT D.C.’S MERIDIAN HILL PARK

In April, we got a great group of vendors together to create this beautiful styled shoot! We couldn't find a couple who was available on the day of the shoot, so Katie stepped up and brought her boyfriend, Arthur, along to act as our bride and groom. Sara hand dip-dyed the dress, which worked perfectly with the mood of the shoot! The blush-to-ivory ombre dress looked fantastic with the floral crown, created by Highway to Hill, and the backdrop, created by Capital Society. All of our vendors worked their little booties off to make this the perfect day - and we were thrilled that Swooned Magazine loved the photographs as much as we did!

Freedom to Marry, EXPLORING TENNESSEE TOGETHER

2015 was a big year for marriage equality. This couple traveled to DC from Tennessee to say "I do" in front of the Supreme Court on their eighth anniversary! Ben and Kayla's Proposal at Great Falls National Park - HowHeAsked

How He Asked: Ben picked Kayla up on the morning of February 8. He walked her into Aveda Salon, gave the receptionist her name, and told Kayla to be dressed and ready for him to pick her up at 3 pm. Kayla spent the next hour in the complete relaxation of a full body massage. After the massage, she was surprised to see Ben’s sister Amelia smiling back at her, with a lunch delivery! They sat and had lunch together until Kayla was called back for her next surprise appointment. Ben had also arranged for Kayla to have a facial and another hour of bliss.

After her facial, Kayla got dressed in the nice outfit and a pair of fancy new boots and returned to the lobby. She was shockingly ready a bit early, so Ben picked her up and told her that they had some “time to waste” before their next destination. It was a randomly beautiful 65 degrees, so they drove to Great Falls Park in Virginia. They walked along the slightly muddy path (while Kayla lamented “I TOLD you to tell me if we were hiking!”), until they reached a perfect spot overlooking one of the waterfalls.

Ben pulled out a gift for Kayla. It was a calendar that he designed especially for her, but she had to start in December and work her way backwards. Each month had a picture with special meaning to the two of them with the days of close friends and family member’s birthdays/special events highlighted.

When Kayla turned to February, the picture was of a small box with a beautiful ring in it and when she turned to look back at Ben, he was down on one knee!

Holding the ring from the picture and asking her to marry him! He says he was waiting forever for her to answer, which is possible because bystanders began to yell “OMG he’s proposing!! Say Yes!!!!” And of course she did.

Tears sprung to her eyes as they hugged, but Ben said “Wait, you can’t cry yet!” He turned and introduced her to Sara – the awesome photographer he hired to capture the moment! Ben & Kayla had their engagement photo shoot right there at the gorgeous falls.

Afterwards (yes, the surprises kept coming), her sister and best friends met up with them to celebrate and eat.

Kayla’s favorite part (if she had to choose) was how many details there were… even the ring fit! Just shows how thoughtful and intentional Ben and her best friends are.

Ben’s favorite part was that Kayla was completely surprised and that her reaction included her saying “I can’t believe that just happened. I’m sweating but I’m freezing, right now! I can’t even think!!” Kayla chooses to block that part out.

Downtown DC Surprise Proposal

We were thrilled to work with Pollyanna Events on this surprise proposal! If you remember, this was the proposal with the bomb threat in front of National Treasury. Here's Pollyanna Event's take on the day:

Love is in the air for this adorable DC couple. Today on the blog, we are sharing how this gentleman popped the question!

We had just hit spring, the weather was warming up, and the cherry blossoms were almost at full bloom. The perfect time for a surprise proposal if you ask me, and were weren’t the only ones that thought that. We worked with the guy and the photographer (Sara) to plan every last detail and we were all so excited for the clock to strike “proposal time”! As I waited close by, the photographer was stationed at the corner of 15th and Penn NW, and for those of you that know DC, you know that is right by the White House.

So, what are the odds of someone dropping off a random, suspicious backpack in the direct location and at the exact time the proposal was supposed to take place?! And what are the odds that White House security was on that bag in lighting speed closing down that entire area along with all surrounding areas nearby?! Very likely in this case. With our photographer being coy as she often is, she asked the police officer if she would be able to stay (even though they were locking down the area) because she was about to do a surprise proposal. And with no ounce of humor in his voice, the police officer said, “NO”. Luckily the bag was clear and the area was re-opened very shortly after it was closed (heart attack avoided!). I mean, thank God, because a surprise proposal was about to happen! A life changing moment! Ok, sorry, we get a little excited when telling exciting wedding related stories.

So, as you can imagine, the proposal was perfect in every way. The couple was in their own little world sharing one of the most exciting moments of their lives and we were so thrilled to be apart of it! There is no doubt about it that this story will go down in “wedding history”.

I knew when I saw the details of their wedding that they would be perfect for a Baltimore wedding blog. Not only did they have these fun details, but also a gorgeous outdoor venue near Baltimore, surrounded by family and love and blue cocktails. Karen was a little nervous before she saw Jeff, but after they had their laughter-filled first look, they both relaxed and rocked the day away. Jeff is a Baltimore City policeman, Karen is a nanny, and I feel like this day captured THEM. It was a very fun wedding to photograph and I’m so glad they chose me to capture it.”

RunWashington

As most of you probably know, we've worked with RunWashington many, many times and we just love them. While we had several photographs included in their magazine over the past few years, we chose to highlight this image because we met this bride THROUGH our photoshoot with RW! And, we just love her!

Jason and Riley's Surprise Proposal | Richmond, VA

She said YES!

This sweet couple met in college and started dating about 3.5 years ago - at this very hotel, The Jefferson Hotel! After casually dating for a bit, Jason introduced Riley to a huge group of people as "his girlfriend." We're fairly certain that their friends already knew that they were dating, but this was the place where Riley was specifically informed that she was his girlfriend. lol

It may not be the fairytale version that you'd expect to read on a wedding blog, but it's just so perfectly them. Riley and Jason pretty much read each other's minds. Details and specifics never really need to be discussed; they just know what the other one wants/is thinking/everything! So, Jason knew that Riley would be expecting to have the "will you be my girlfriend" conversation and decided to throw her off and just announce it to everyone! Needless to say, Riley was VERY surprised - and Jason was thrilled!

It was really quite cute.

So, a few years later, they found themselves staying in that same hotel again. Jason claimed there was a groupon deal, so they just HAD to go. The real reason is that he was planning on proposing to the love of his life. Jason knew that she would say yes, but he decided to actually ask her this time, instead of the alternative approach he took the first time around. ;)

Congratulations, you two lovebirds! We wish you a lifetime of happiness! <3

Here's a little sneak peek of this beautiful winter wedding in Virginia! From the stunning wedding gown to the USA groomsmen gifts, this wedding had EVERYTHING! How beautiful is that faux fur?! And, the adorable purse?! And, did you SEE this bride's smile?! The groom's dimples?! It was like a wedding out of a DREAM! We are SO HAPPY that we were able to be a part of such a perfect day! Not to mention that we were lucky enough to see tons of amazing people we hung out with at our Baltimore Waterfront wedding a few months ago!

Marianna + Nick's Engagement Session | Meridian Hill Park | Washington, DC

Congratulations to Marianna and Nick!

Marianna is one of Sara's oldest friends. They met in elementary school when Marianna moved into the neighborhood. Over the summers, they would ride bikes, swim in Marianna's pool, hike in the woods, or play lightning tag on the golf course behind Sara's home. They were always doing something and that something was always adventurous.

A few years ago, three weeks after Sara started dating her now-husband, Sara flew over to Bilbao, Spain where Marianna was studying. They shared a twin bed, ran with the bulls, stayed up all night laughing and dancing to Corey Hart's Sunglasses at Night in piazzas, were attacked by birds who wanted to eat their egg sandwiches, and had many, many other adventures together. We could probably fill our entire blog with stories from that trip! It was a hoot!

When Marianna first started dating Nick, Sara just knew. He was it. He makes Marianna feel like the incredible woman she is, loves her to pieces, let's her run free and spend months overseas if that's what she wants to do, and supports her in all of her endeavors. As a friend, what more can you ask for? He's amazing and we could not be happier for Marianna and Nick!

Congratulations, you two! Thank you for including us in all of these special memories - and all of the special memories to come! We love you two!

Happy Holidays! A Christmas Proposal in Vienna, VA

Congratulations to Dan and Ellie!

Dan and Ellie are friends of Katie from George Mason University, where Katie received her degree in Photography. So, when Dan thought about hiring a photographer to capture his proposal, she immediately came to mind. But, as much as Katie wanted to photograph the special moment, they both knew that seeing Katie with a camera would take the element of surprise away. So, Katie passed along my contact info and I set up a call with Dan.

The plan was for me to be outside the historic part of the Vienna Presbyterian Church after their weekly service. I was going to be “photographing the church” and Dan was going to stop and ask me to take a picture with his phone. I would distract Ellie by asking her questions about the history of the church (or something … I’m more of a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants type of gal when acting natural. Anything else would be … unnatural. lol) while Dan got the engagement ring (Ellie’s grandmother’s ring) out of his pocket and got down on one knee.

Sounds perfect!

So, I arrived at the church and quickly grabbed a seat on a ledge to wait for the couple to turn the corner and start the plan. I snapped a few photographs of the church and surrounding area because it was really cute and it was a gorgeous day. I noticed a large group starting to form next to me who seemed to be discussing something about a surprise and organizing where to stand. Clearly, this was the families of the couple. I introduced myself. They’d been given instructions to hide until Dan got down on one knee. Their energy was SO over-the-moon excited that I knew there was no way they would be able to contain themselves.

As soon as Dan and Ellie came around the corner, the family rushed forward - some tearing up, some jumping up and down, some clapping. No point in hiding for me!

Dan got down on one knee and, of course, Ellie said yes!

We stopped by the Vienna Trolley on the way back to their home for a surprise family brunch, with what looked like a mini wedding cake for them to cut - which was good practice for when they tie the knot!

Their house is adorable and has such sweet little details everywhere you look - and, obviously, I couldn't resist taking photos of them. I loved the antique holiday decor and lanterns!

Their dog, Bailey, a yellow lab who wanders the neighborhood like an outdoor cat, even swung by for a quick photograph before I headed back to DC.

We are so happy for these two to officially spend the rest of their lives together! They are both wondering and we are ecstatic that they found each other!

The plan for Pammie & Blake’s photoshoot was to get some beautiful sunset photos, so we scheduled the shoot for right around the time the sun was supposed to go down. When the day arrived, of course, it was the gloomiest day we had seen in weeks! The sky lacked the pretty colors we were hoping for, so we decided just to improvise!

We have to admit, these photos turned out completely different than we originally imagined (with romantic orange and pinks streaking through the sky and the sun sank down over the Potomac). We had no idea that it was a blessing in disguise because these photos are so THEM!

I, Katie, have been friends with Pammie since we were kids. We ice skated together for years! Doesn’t this classy couple look fabulous in front of the DC Capitol Building and the awesome architecture of the Library of Congress!? Well, for Pammie, it's definitely natural to look so good in front of such important buildings, scenery, pretty much everything...Haha! She is the epitome of elegance, which made taking these a dream!

-- Funny story -- when we took these photos, Pammie was waiting on her results from the bar exam. Since then, she found out that she PASSED! WOOHOO! And, on her first try! Woohoo! And, we can't forget Blake. He has such a genuine smile that was so easy to capture!

After we were finished in Capitol Hill, we headed to Georgetown to get some more casual photos. And, gosh darn it -- even when being "casual", this couple is just naturally good looking. We can't wait for their wedding next year to capture even more amazing photos of these two!

Sneak Peek: Surprise Proposal | Dan + Ellie | Vienna, VA

Congratulations to the newly engaged couple!

After service at the Vienna Presbyterian Church last Sunday morning, Dan decided to pop the question to Ellie - in front of their entire families! It's not often that we see such a large group waiting to surprise one of our couples!

They tried to hide, but the family was just too excited and couldn't help rushing out to meet the couple before Dan had a chance to pop the question. Needless to say there was a great deal of cheering and excitement as Dan asked Ellie to be his wife!

Afterward, there was a sweet little family brunch at the newly engaged couple's home, complete with all the bells and whistles.

He Caught a Gazelle!

Andy was looking for a girl who would give him a run for his money; Phoebe is a runner - who happens to be so fast she's often referred to as a gazelle. We met Phoebe back when we were photographing for the second or third RunWashington magazine issue we worked on. The title of the article was Something Happened on the Way to Boston and the magazine wanted us to capture several runners who ran into major issues while training for the marathon. She'd been training for the Boston Marathon and had broken her tibia while running. She didn't realize it, so she continued to run on it for quite some time (let's be clear here, we mean that she continued to run on her broken leg for WEEKS, not minutes). Finally, she went to the doctor, who was shocked that she could walk, let alone run.

Phoebe was really disappointed that she couldn't make it to the Boston Marathon, which ended up being quite lucky for us since we may not have met her otherwise. Unable to do any high-impact activities, Phoebe had turned to yoga.

What happened after we photographed her for this article is pretty much the perfect explanation of who Phoebe is: we were told by the editor that we needed to reshoot her portion of the article. So, we went back to photograph her again. Before we started, we had to sit her down and explain how to look disappointed or unhappy. No joke! It was a challenge. It's not easy for this positive lady to dwell and it's not natural for her to be upset. She truly does make her own sunshine - and she shares it with everyone around her.

Needless to say we love her. :)

We met Andy a few years later. When you've met Phoebe, it's hard not to be protective of her, so when it came to making a decision about whether or not Andy was worthy of this fantastic lady, one can't help but be a bit skeptical. Within minutes, however, it's impossible not to see how perfect they are together. Their wedding brought tears of joy to our eyes over and over again (which is not the easiest thing to deal with while photographing lol); the editing process sent us through the same rollercoaster of happiness, excitement, laughter, and a few tears of joy! These two lovebirds (and their pup, Bella, who was so excited that as soon as she saw Phoebe she bounded over in hopes of jumping all over that pretty white gown; sadly - for Bella, that is - Andy was there to protect his new wife lol) opted not to see each other before the ceremony. It was quite difficult - and very entertaining - because they were both VERY committed and enjoyed every bump in the road. Like when Andy decided he needed to move his car at the EXACT SECOND that Phoebe was arriving at River Farm! The ladies laughed as they circled around the bride-to-be to hide her from her future husband. Luckily, one of the groomsmen saw the girls and ran out to move the car for Andy! It was quite funny, though, and we had a good laugh with everyone about it!

After that, we went to great lengths to make sure that doors were closed when either the bride or groom was on the move for photographs, water, drinks - whatever they needed to do before the ceremony! lol

How could anyone not LOVE that smile?! :)

Every aspect of this wedding was just what we'd hoped for - and everyone, including us, had a blast! We hope you all enjoy these photographs as much as we enjoyed taking them! A few weeks ago, Katie's brother got engaged to a wonderful lady - and we are thrilled! So thrilled, in fact, that Katie went all the way up to Owego, NY to photograph their engagement session! Keep reading for all the beautiful details and all things Lingan!

My brother, Andrew had been dating Christie for about 5 years...and she has felt like part of the family for roughly 4.75 of those years. ;) They met at Virginia Tech, where they both studied engineering. When Andrew brought her home for the first time, she immediately fit in. Fast forward a few years, everyone knew they were going to get married, but my brother is the kind of guy who always has a game plan, but will never tell anyone. Christie's birthday was coming up, and Andrew had her fully convinced that an engagement ring was not in the picture. As Christie sat in the living room on the morning of her birthday, she remembered that Andrew had made her a cake the night before. When she asked him to come downstairs to frost the cake so she could eat it for breakfast (yes, breakfast), he came down the steps with a ring, and proposed. Right in the living room. In their pajamas. And I can't even begin to explain how perfectly that story sums up their relationship.

When it came time to shoot their engagement photos, I had so many ideas. Let's face it- I had practically been planning this shoot in my head for years! Since Christie moved to Maryland to be with my brother a few years ago, they have decided to get married here. However, Christie is originally from an adorable small town in upstate New York, called Owego. Her parents live in the mountains, and when fall rolls around, it's gorgeous. If you don't believe me, check out these photos! These were all taken at the "Testa Ranch", as we call it! We road tripped up there one weekend, got spoiled with Mommy Testa's cooking, and took a lot of photos. I can't wait to stand next to these two in October when they say "I do!"

Congratulations to Amber + Kevin!

This couple is just hysterical! They spent the majority of the wedding day cracking jokes, making faces, and giggling. Their parents, along with a friend/officiant and their puppy, who they lovingly refer to as Brat Dog.

We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful autumn day to spend at the National Capitol Columns in the National Arboretum. It was warm, with a lovely breeze - just the perfect day for this special couple's wedding day!

We had a fantastic time celebrating with this group and cant wait to share the rest of the photographs! For now, here's a little sneak peek of this fun, crazy, and romantic wedding!

Sneak Peek: Lydia + Carl's Wedding ı Friends Meeting House of Washington

Congratulations to Lydia + Carl!

These two lovebirds had a beautiful, private wedding at Friends Meeting House of Washington. Because it's the custom for Quaker weddings, the ceremony was not photographed - by anyone, including us. This was actually our first wedding where this was the case. It went against everything that has been ingrained in us as photographers; however, we couldn't help but love it! No distractions, not a lot of fanfare, and everyone truly present in the moment. We found the ceremony to be very beautiful; here are a few basic details about these very personal ceremonies.

Quaker weddings differ from what we think of as the "traditional" ceremony in several ways, in addition to photography not being allowed. There is no officiant and there is a long period of silent, open worship. Afterward, the guests are allowed speak on the couple's behalf.

They had a lovely little cocktail hour immediately following the ceremony where the adults gathered and the children played. Later that evening, they hosted their reception at Eastern Market. Each guest received a card with another guests' name. They were instructed to befriend this person by the end of the reception. What a sweet idea!

We loved this wedding and will share more details of Lydia and Carl's big day when we share the rest of the photographs!

Inner Harbor Wedding ı Baltimore, MD

Beautiful Baltimore Wedding - on one of the hottest days of the year!

If you remember our recent snowy engagement session post, you will recognize the irony here. Rachel and Chris' engagement session was on one of the coldest days of the year - the bay was frozen! - and their wedding was on one of the HOTTEST days of the year!

After their engagement last November, Rachel and Chris began planning this gorgeous wedding. What better place than the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, MD, for such a special day?!

Despite the heat, the wedding was perfect; the sun was shining on the bay as they said their "I do's", Camden Yards was buzzing, and we were able to swing through and grab some photos at the couple's favorite bar, Sliders!

The day was filled with love and laughter - and we had a great time with Chris, Rachel, and all of their loved ones!

Rachel and Chris went to Orlando, FL, for her cousin’s wedding last November. They decided to make a vacation out of the trip and ended up driving to St. Pete Beach, on the gulf coast, to spend a few days enjoying the sun and sand before heading back to chilly Maryland.

They had heard that St. Pete’s white sand beaches were beautiful and that the sunsets over the water were breath-taking. One evening, they were getting ready to go to dinner and Chris suggested that the couple go out to the beach to watch the sunset.

Rachel and Chris walked out to the sand, grabbed a seat, and chatted about nothing in particular as the sun sank toward the sea. Just before the sun slipped over the horizon, Chris got down on one knee and asked Rachel to marry him. She, of course, said yes!

They were both super excited and totally giddy about their engagement, so they went to the hotel restaurant and to celebrate with some champagne.

We adore Rachel and Chris. They are such a sweet, beautiful couple and we were honored to be a part of their big day! We hope you enjoy the photographs as much as we enjoyed taking them!

Sarah + Paresh's Intimate Wedding | DC War Memorial | Washington, DC

Paresh contacted us just two weeks before the wedding day, and by some twist of fate, we were available!

Of our many years living and photographing in and around DC, we had never photographed a wedding at the DC War Memorial, but we have always wanted to. It's just so beautiful, quiet, and romantic!

Paresh's mother created all of the florals - which were absolutely stunning!

Megan + Tom's Modern Newseum Wedding | Washington, DC

The Proposal

The next night, Tom caught the garter at a cousin's wedding, which was pretty funny

There were circles included in almost every aspect of the wedding day. They were inspired by the quote

The universal symbol of a circle represents the notions of totality, wholeness, eternity, and unity.

When the girls lined up in order, the numbers were 10-8-17 - Megan and Tom's wedding date!

Megan incorporated a pair of her grandma's earrings, and a bracelet she gave Megan when she was 12 around her bouquet. Her grandmother passed away a few years ago, so it was a nice way to have her as a part of the day.

After 3 years of long distance, finally having everyone in one place was just the greatest

Megan and Tom picked the Newseum because the view encompassed their relationship -- Megan was born in DC, they met in DC, and then obviously the flag at the Canadian Embassy next door. They served poutine to have a little bit of Canada with them in the US.

The script S on the dance floor and end of the aisle runner was the handwriting of the mother of the bride. All of their friends and family recognized that as a "Savary thing"; Megan even has it tattooed behind her ear

Since their last name is Stark, the couple entered to the Game of Thrones theme song!
