Military Running ı RunWashington Magazine StoryRunWashington: Military RunningJohnathon MullenA friend of mine works at RunWashington and contacted me about doing a shoot about military running. Scheduling was a challenge and, because of a conflict, I almost had to pass it off to another - very talented - photographer who has helped me out in the past. I was bummed, but that stuff happens. In retrospect, I am so glad that I did not miss the opportunity to meet Johnathon Mullen, photograph him running, and hear his incredibly inspiring story. It was impossible not to be moved by John Mullen's story. I knew that I was photographing a veteran who was a double amputee in advance of the shoot. He had just gotten his running legs and I'd be documenting him running (I mean, it was a RunWashington shoot, after all). :) That was the extent of my knowledge. When I arrived, it was obvious that losing his legs in combat couldn't keep John down. He is determined to do everything he was able to do before being deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan, including run. What did I not know before arriving on location, you ask? John is a professional photographer, too! Like me, his love is portraiture and he strives to bring out the story of his subjects through his photographs. I'm not exaggerating. He's actually this awesome - at 21 years old.
This was an awesome shoot. I had a great time working with John and I'm excited to see his photographs exhibited some day soon!
