In the months leading up to the big day, I had been out-of-my-mind excited to shoot the wedding of Jared and Joylyn. The three of us had been planning out everything for so long, and I couldn’t believe it was finally time. I woke up in the morning to get everything prepared and meet up with my second shooter. Excited as can be, I opened my blinds, and BAM! It was raining. There had been a slight chance of rain in the forecast all week, but I didn’t even really consider rain as an option, since the couple had planned everything for the ceremony to be outdoors. During the drive to Baltimore, my second shooter and I noticed big black clouds the whole way. It was sprinkling a little bit on the way there, but it looked like it was bound to get worse. We arrived at the venue just as the rain let up. It was actually quite sunny! As I was spending time upstairs with Joylyn and all of the girls getting ready, where there was gorgeous light spilling through the windows, and a balcony that we even stepped out on to take photos after her hair was finished. The weather continued to stay nice through the first look — actually it was quite stunning! ©Sara Alepin (Photos from the Harty). While Jared stood waiting for his bride at the end of the isle, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for him as he wiped away raindrops from his face. Then, of course, thunder started roaring in the distance. Joylyn still wasn’t outside yet, so everyone was collectively trying to help cover up the speakers and all the electronics. I had a trash bag draped over my camera just in case the rain got worse, but I kid you not, as soon as Joy started walking down the isle, the rain let up! ©Sara Alepin (Photos from the Harty). Never in my life have I seen something so perfectly timed. I spent a good amount of time photographing the newlyweds directly after the ceremony, and the only evidence of bad weather was the grass. There was not a single photo that proved the scary weather to be true; and, quite honestly, I’ve told this story to so many people, and after seeing the photos, they all reply with something like, “I almost don’t believe that story because the photos look like they were taken on such a gorgeous day!” My second shooter and I left the wedding together, only to jump in our car and ten minutes down the road get blasted with pouring rain, thunder, and lightening. I view these photos as something almost magical, just because of the hidden stories of a storm that did not show through in any of the photos. We’ve all heard the old wive’s tale that if it rains on your wedding day, you will be blessed with a happy life together, and on this particular day, I think Jared and Joylyn were more than blessed. They were lucky. They got the rain on their wedding day to bless them with a happy marriage, but they stayed dry the whole time. ©Sara Alepin (Photos from the Harty).
