2015 was a Busy Year! Blogs, Magazines, Publications, Features
You know when the smoke clears and the sparkle of the holidays starts to fade?
Suddenly, you have time to actually get to reflect on the last crazy, busy year of your work life? Well, HOLY COW!
Today, we started a list of blog features, publications, magazine articles, websites, etc. We could not BELIEVE the number of images, weddings, proposals, events, portraits, engagements, and even commercial photography have been picked up and featured on blogs! Some of which we didn't even know about! And, we are always flattered when the talented vendors we work with choose to use our images to showcase their own work. It feels awesome to be able to support our frendors! ;) It seems we had a pretty significant spike in website features this year, too!
Check out the Photos from the Harty publications and fun from 2015! Bring it on 2016! We've got this! WOOT!

One of our beautiful brides entered this competition with one of the photographs from our engagement session and won by a landslide! We were not only super happy for her, but also proud to have been a small part of making her dreams come true!

Huffington Post, 16 Of The Best 'OMG' Proposal Moments Captured On Camera
We will admit, when The Huffington Post reached out to us to request use of this photograph, we were a little shell shocked. We're not sure exactly how they found us or this photograph, but we were flattered and extremely happy to see the photograph of this gorgeous surprise proposal session when the article was published!
This proposal received a ton of attention in 2015, as you'll see in this blog. It was picked up by several blogs, websites, and more. And, how could it not!? This couple is just SO ADORABLE! We loved sharing this moment with them! Surprise proposals are SO MUCH FUN!
Capitol Romance, Kim & Greg’s Patriotic, Red White & Blue DC Wedding at Hotel Monaco
As soon as we met this bride-to-be, we knew we were going to publish this wedding. The plans were just too good! Lucky for this amazing couple - and for us! - everything came together perfectly on their wedding day! The tea-length dress set the tone for a night of dancing while showing off the her stunning blue pumps. The red, white, and blue theme was done perfectly and Hotel Monaco was the perfect venue to showcase their DC-style. The surprise American flag sunglasses were a hit - and an excellent way to end the evening! Photographing this wedding was a ball!
In April, we got a great group of vendors together to create this beautiful styled shoot! We couldn't find a couple who was available on the day of the shoot, so Katie stepped up and brought her boyfriend, Arthur, along to act as our bride and groom. Sara hand dip-dyed the dress, which worked perfectly with the mood of the shoot! The blush-to-ivory ombre dress looked fantastic with the floral crown, created by Highway to Hill, and the backdrop, created by Capital Society. All of our vendors worked their little booties off to make this the perfect day - and we were thrilled that Swooned Magazine loved the photographs as much as we did!

Freedom to Marry, EXPLORING TENNESSEE TOGETHER
2015 was a big year for marriage equality. This couple traveled to DC from Tennessee to say "I do" in front of the Supreme Court on their eighth anniversary! We were so pleased to be a part of this incredible moment and just loved these two fabulous grooms! The recently submitted their wedding to Freedom to Marry and we were super excited to see that it was published! It was wonderful to see photographs that we took several years ago shared surrounding such a monumental moment in history!
Bridal Bellhop has worked with District Bliss for several socials - both Couples and Vendor Socials. We love working with them, we love the concept of the website, and we loved seeing some of our photographs featured on their website!
Notely picked up this engagement photography session from How He Asked. It was really cool to find this while googling to find a different blog post!
This wedding received a ton of attention across the board! Notely took Capitol Romance's blog post and shared it on their site!
Notely also thought that Ben and Kayla's surprise proposal was a huge hit and shared the How He Asked post on their site!
We were lucky to be one of the Participating Vendors at the very first District Bliss Couples Social! We had a great time photographing this laid-back alternative to a bridal expo/wedding-inspired happy hour. It was super fun!
How He Asked
How He Asked: Chris and I went to Orlando for my cousin’s wedding in last November. We decided to make a vacation out of the trip and ended up driving to St. Pete Beach, on the gulf coast, to spend a few days enjoying the sun and sand before heading back to chilly Maryland.
We’d heard that St. Pete’s white sand beaches were beautiful and that the sunsets over the water were breath-taking. One evening, we were getting ready to go to dinner and Chris suggested we go out to the beach to watch the sunset.
We walked out to the sand, grabbed a seat, and chatted about nothing in particular as the sun sank toward the sea. Just before the sun slipped over the horizon, Chris got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I, of course, said yes!
We were both super excited and totally giddy about our engagement, we went to the hotel restaurant and celebrated with some champagne.
How He Asked: Ben picked Kayla up on the morning of February 8. He walked her into Aveda Salon, gave the receptionist her name, and told Kayla to be dressed and ready for him to pick her up at 3 pm. Kayla spent the next hour in the complete relaxation of a full body massage. After the massage, she was surprised to see Ben’s sister Amelia smiling back at her, with a lunch delivery! They sat and had lunch together until Kayla was called back for her next surprise appointment. Ben had also arranged for Kayla to have a facial and another hour of bliss.
After her facial, Kayla got dressed in the nice outfit and a pair of fancy new boots and returned to the lobby. She was shockingly ready a bit early, so Ben picked her up and told her that they had some “time to waste” before their next destination. It was a randomly beautiful 65 degrees, so they drove to Great Falls Park in Virginia. They walked along the slightly muddy path (while Kayla lamented “I TOLD you to tell me if we were hiking!”), until they reached a perfect spot overlooking one of the waterfalls.
Ben pulled out a gift for Kayla. It was a calendar that he designed especially for her, but she had to start in December and work her way backwards. Each month had a picture with special meaning to the two of them with the days of close friends and family member’s birthdays/special events highlighted.
When Kayla turned to February, the picture was of a small box with a beautiful ring in it and when she turned to look back at Ben, he was down on one knee!
Holding the ring from the picture and asking her to marry him! He says he was waiting forever for her to answer, which is possible because bystanders began to yell “OMG he’s proposing!! Say Yes!!!!” And of course she did.
Tears sprung to her eyes as they hugged, but Ben said “Wait, you can’t cry yet!” He turned and introduced her to Sara – the awesome photographer he hired to capture the moment! Ben & Kayla had their engagement photo shoot right there at the gorgeous falls.
Afterwards (yes, the surprises kept coming), her sister and best friends met up with them to celebrate and eat.
Kayla’s favorite part (if she had to choose) was how many details there were… even the ring fit! Just shows how thoughtful and intentional Ben and her best friends are.
Ben’s favorite part was that Kayla was completely surprised and that her reaction included her saying “I can’t believe that just happened. I’m sweating but I’m freezing, right now! I can’t even think!!” Kayla chooses to block that part out.
Capital Society was one of the first Participating Vendors for District Bliss. We decided to do a mini photoshoot together when we met to go over designs. The home was just incredible and Shelli is a real stunner!
Shelli invited us over to create potpourri-filled Christmas tree ornaments! We photographed some of it for fun and we were excited to see our snaps featured on her blog.
It's always flattering to be asked by vendors that you respect and adore for photographs to use for specific blogs. That's what happened with ALL of the following sets of images published on the Pollyanna Events blog, except for the surprise proposal. She shares fantastic tips about wedding planning and life, so we are thrilled to have been a part of several blogs in 2015!
Who doesn't love seeing their photograph used (and credited!) as a graphic for such a great blog topic!
We were very lucky to have Pollyanna Event's event design and coordination for our styled shoot!
We were thrilled to work with Pollyanna Events on this surprise proposal! If you remember, this was the proposal with the bomb threat in front of National Treasury. Here's Pollyanna Event's take on the day:
Love is in the air for this adorable DC couple. Today on the blog, we are sharing how this gentleman popped the question!
We had just hit spring, the weather was warming up, and the cherry blossoms were almost at full bloom. The perfect time for a surprise proposal if you ask me, and were weren’t the only ones that thought that. We worked with the guy and the photographer (Sara) to plan every last detail and we were all so excited for the clock to strike “proposal time”! As I waited close by, the photographer was stationed at the corner of 15th and Penn NW, and for those of you that know DC, you know that is right by the White House.
So, what are the odds of someone dropping off a random, suspicious backpack in the direct location and at the exact time the proposal was supposed to take place?! And what are the odds that White House security was on that bag in lighting speed closing down that entire area along with all surrounding areas nearby?! Very likely in this case. With our photographer being coy as she often is, she asked the police officer if she would be able to stay (even though they were locking down the area) because she was about to do a surprise proposal. And with no ounce of humor in his voice, the police officer said, “NO”. Luckily the bag was clear and the area was re-opened very shortly after it was closed (heart attack avoided!). I mean, thank God, because a surprise proposal was about to happen! A life changing moment! Ok, sorry, we get a little excited when telling exciting wedding related stories.
So, as you can imagine, the proposal was perfect in every way. The couple was in their own little world sharing one of the most exciting moments of their lives and we were so thrilled to be apart of it! There is no doubt about it that this story will go down in “wedding history”.
Here are some of the photos from the beautiful proposal!
Our proposal at Great Falls National Park was featured as one of the top proposal locations!
This one isn't a photograph, but a little blurb about how we contributed to making 2014 a great year for Pollyanna Events!
2014 was the year that we joined forces with Photos From the Harty and created the raddest social events company in DC which does vendor socials and couples socials. Forget the big overwhelming wedding expos, we are a pressure free zone focusing on fun happy hours while still giving you all the perks, just like an expo event! Check out all the details here.
We were thrilled to be second shoot for super talented L.A. Birdie Photography at this amazing wedding! We love working with other fantastic vendors!
Charm City Wed: L.A. Birdie Photography captured this beautiful Howard County Conservancy wedding, and shared these words with us: “From the personalized crab mallets, Natty Boh wine glasses, and Orioles/Ravens cake, Karen and Jeff’s day was sprinkled with love for their city! I knew when I saw the details of their wedding that they would be perfect for a Baltimore wedding blog. Not only did they have these fun details, but also a gorgeous outdoor venue near Baltimore, surrounded by family and love and blue cocktails. Karen was a little nervous before she saw Jeff, but after they had their laughter-filled first look, they both relaxed and rocked the day away. Jeff is a Baltimore City policeman, Karen is a nanny, and I feel like this day captured THEM. It was a very fun wedding to photograph and I’m so glad they chose me to capture it.”

The very talented make-up artist from our styled shoot also worked with us on our red, white, and blue wedding.
As a favor to both the founder of No Anxiety Prep, Nikkee Porcaro, and Capital Society, who designed the website, Sara agreed to be IN some of the photographs used on this website - as a "student". LOL
She's pretty embarrassed about them, but we think the website looks great and we're thrilled that it has helped No Anxiety Prep become even MORE popular in the DMV!
We've worked several District Bliss events together and have since become good friends. When The Capital Candy Jar needed a website make-over, we were their first call! How we turn that down? Especially because we got to eat ALL OF THE CANDY that we photographed!
We were thrilled to work with Knot the Guy at their FIRST wedding! We happily shared the images and are so pleased to be part of this website! It's true - it IS his day, too! :)
We'd worked with Just Smile Entertainment's photo booth at several events and just loved the owners. We were thrilled to be their first call when they launched their new bowtie line - designed and created locally!
We have known Linda for ages! She's beautiful, talented, and just all-around amazing. We helped her with her brand launch (we even created - and acted in! EEP! - a video for her Kickstarter) and have continued to help with photography and maintaining social media/websites since!
We've worked with NDSS on a whole rack of events. We are big supporters of Down Syndrome and have been more than happy to spend time with this lovely group of supporters - and to help highlight why this cause is so important.
The Gay Directory reached out to us in early 2015 and have been huge supporters of Photos from the Harty since!
Pixilated Podcast, Pixilated Photo Booth
We were asked by Pixilated to be a part of their podcast; we were one of their first interviews. Sara went into it totally blind, having no idea what we'd be talking about. It's rather entertaining and gives you some insight into both Patrick, the co-owner of Pixilated, and Sara.
Virginia Bride Magazine reached out to us to request photographs to "make their instagram pretty." Since then, we've been featured on their social media a LOT (we haven't counted, but trust us - it's A LOT). It's awesome to be able to support each other and cross-promote on social media! :)
Print Magazine Features
Golfer's Digest reached out to offer to include our photographs in their magazine, across from the LPGA schedule. Woot! We're excited to see the print book soon!
This fantastic magazine reached out in hopes of using some winter proposal photographs in their 2015-16 magazine. How could we say no?! We cant wait to see the spread!
As most of you probably know, we've worked with RunWashington many, many times and we just love them. While we had several photographs included in their magazine over the past few years, we chose to highlight this image because we met this bride THROUGH our photoshoot with RW! And, we just love her!
2015 treated Photos from the Harty pretty gosh darn well; we cannot wait to see what 2016 has in store for us! We've already started making TONS of new memories with new clients, vendors, and friends! :)
Happy New Year!

Photos from the Harty, a team of lifestyle, wedding, and event photographers, was founded by Sara (Hartenstine) Alepin in 2005 after she graduated with a BA in Art Studio & Education and began working on her MFA in Photography & Digital Imaging. After years of working together, Katie Lingan officially joined the team as lead photographer in 2013.
Over the years, we've learned a lot from capturing - and being a part of - all types of special moments, especially weddings. One thing that has really stuck with us: it's not only important that you love our images - you must also love your photographer. You will spend more time with us on your wedding day than anyone else. So, it's important that you enjoy being around us on your big day!
So, keep reading to get to know us better. If you like what you read and like what you see, please reach out to us. We look forward to meeting you!
